My first time reading a manhua (manga = Japanese, manhwa = korean, manhua = taiwanese).

Cane Lele was born into the fashion industry. Her mother, Ye Fei Yi, was Taiwan’s top model, and her father was also a model, until a tragic airplane crash left Lele without parents. Therefore, it is no surprise that Lele hates the industry, thinking it superficial and unnecessary.

Raised by her maternal grandmother, Lele reaches sixteen before she is sucked in by her mother’s sister, Ye Fei Hong, a fashion model agent (and former model), convinces the reluctant Lele to model. Lele had been adverse to the whole idea, until she sees a photo shoot of popular American model Angus Lanson, and she begins to see modeling as an art form.

When Aunt Fei Hong’s magazine editor invites Angus Lanson to a meeting of all the top fashion ambassadors, Lele is invited to meet him and is very curious. She does not know that Angus’ twin elder brother, Eros Lanson, is secretly accompanying his brother. When Lele is invited to NYC to start off her career as an internationally known model this obviously leads to confusion and is the start of the charming story of Lele’s goals: fashion in NYC, becoming a top model, and love? Where do I begin? My Skip-Beat deprived self led me to discover “The One”. The premise is the same (entertainment scene) but the story is different (from SB).

While I was initially neutral towards the first few chapters, I grew to love the story as I read on. I don’t know why but as I was scanning the manga (before I even started to read it) I was not captivated by the characters but as I got to know the characters deeply, they became dearer to me.

So let me start with the twins. SUCH. SUCH. SUCH. HOT.TIES. If I were to base my judgment on looks alone, I’d choose them both, or rather I think I’d choose Angus but after reading the manga (up to the latest chapter – 82), of course I ended up liking Eros (like who wouldn’t?).

I have two main thoughts about this manhua. First is that I wanted to see more of Lele’s career as a model. I felt that her rise to stardom was kinda rushed. Plus, this manhua is one of the few ones that I actually enjoyed reading Lele’s story (even if it did not include the twins in the scene, though I equally love those parts), more than reading the twins story alone. Second, more than Lele’s story, I love it when they feature Lele and Eros together, though there were a lot of times that each character were featured separately but times when these two are together were so precious 🙂

However, I have some concerns. First, I’d like to think of The One as a yaoi in disguise. I hate yaoi stories, but though this is not really yaoi, there were some aspects that makes it one – though I really can’t blame the author because in the modeling world, BL is usually rampant (only makes the story realistic). Luckily, I was not disheartened seeing yaoi in action xD. Another concern: I hate the twins’ father. LIKE for real. Why would you let your son be a gigolo? Angus is a given, but making Eros too?? Seeing Eros having ‘that’ with someone literally broke my heart. Why would Angus choose to obey his father’s wishes? He can ignore his orders because he is of age and he can stand on his own (or is it more complicated than that?).

Now that the problem with the twins’ father is solved, I think the story will focus more on Lele’s journey in becoming “The One”. Feidna will cause trouble, that is to be expected but I would want to see more development between Yin and Lele 🙂 And wouldn’t it be nice for Angus to develop feelings for Lele too?
